  • I got this after trying out and returning a cheap Elta I saw at the BX. It was 1/4 the price but this hand vac is easily 4 times better and worth every penny. I can't say how long the battery lasts but the suction is very strong and it looks great. It's a bit bulky compared to other hand vacuums but because of the small size and rotary action of the nozzle, it gets everywhere you need and it's not too heavy. I am in a very dusty location and got it to keep a small dorm space picked up of crumbs and rogue hairs. It sucks up just about anything that will fit through the nozzle including bottle cap wrapper seals. The shelf packaging comes inside a Black & Decker shipping box that is about 13"x13"x8". After the required initial 21 hour charge it was ready to go. The light on the charging base stays lit any time the unit is docked and doesn't turn off to indicate that it has a "full charge." The manual says it can be docked indefinitely without warnings about overcharging. The charging plug is 110/120v only and not universal voltage. I charged it on a step-down transformer where I'm pretty sure the power output is still the input 50Hz and not the usual American 60Hz.

I decided on this one after seeing some mixed reviews of the newer B&D PHV1810. That one looks like they trimmed some bulk from the core, maybe some weight too. That wasn't important to me especially as it sounded like it didn't perform up to this one.

We have had many handvacs over the years. This one replaced an absolutely HORRIBLE 1 1/2 year old Dyson handvac. The Black and Decker is amazing - 10 times the suction power of the Dyson, easy to clean, and the battery actually lasts for quite a while. I would recommend this to anyone (especially those frustrated with the performance of other handvacs).

  • The Gator Hand Vacuum takes innovation in dirt disposal to the next level. While making cleaning easier and more convenient. Power , Innovation, Convenience and Value define the new Gator series of hand vacuums. The Gator hand vacuum has a unique dirt cup that flips open for easy empty. This saves the user time and the hassle of emptying a traditional two-piece hand vac dirt cup. Just press the dirt cup release buttons to flip open the lid and empty, close the lid and go.

  • Well, I don't use it every single day, but it has worked well - as advertised - right out of the box. I have no complaints. I would recommend it to anyone.

Design and Functionality - aon ledoma -
Bought one and it was dead on purchase. But my review isn't strictly based on it being dead. I already know this thing has good suction. 15v is already a lot better than a 10v and even the old school 7v have good enough suction for simple clean up. Power isn't the issue here. Most of my critique are personal preferences relating to design and functionality.

The dirt cup capacity is really disappointingly small compared to other hand vacs, like less then a cup.

The filter is comprised with a wire mess and behind it, the regular paper filter. Interesting design as less will get caught in the paper filter going through the first wire filter (however the first filter takes up more then half of the dirt cup, causing the small dirt capacity). The rinse to clean the filter is a great feature, although I would still do that with other hand vac filters. The wire mesh pre-filter is a really great idea, and I would consider to put them in other hand vacs, because I can see it being very useful for fur, string, and hair. Further increases the life of the paper filters.

The overall design is kind of fatty. I like longer style hand vacs.

The overall look and feel of the quality is below average, specially when you consider the built in crevice tool.

The built in crevice tool is cheap and does not slide with ease, causing me to pinch my palm when I was forcing it back in.

Dirt cup spring ejection is nice, making emptying simple, but I can see this being really annoying if the spring was to break.

Because of it's fatty design, it feels heavier, as more weight is centralized in one area, than dispersed.

Power terminal and power switch feel cheap compared to the rest of the unit.

  • So far so good... - Kee - Usa
After an issue with our Shark pet hand vac not being able to charge anymore, we found this. I am not particularly fond of the color red in general and we all know DD's are a very bright, blinding red. I have used it before the 24 hour charge period, and naturally it began to die on me. Why its not almost fully charged already concerns me, to say the least. I do not recall receiving the brush attachment with the product.

    Pros:

It seems to pick up nicely and have good suction power for the price.

The filter is washable and so is the dirt cup.

The charging port is on the back of the handle, not on the underside like other products.. This is much more convenient.
    __________________________________________________

    Cons:

Takes a long time to charge
The dirt cup is small, but this isn't really a big deal for me because when I'm cleaning I always keep a large trash can or trash bag with me at all times and can empty it frequently. This could however, be a problem for others.

The bright red color is hideous, but that's what Dirt Devil makes their products in.

That gray tight corners tool that comes out doesn't stay out. You have to manually hold it out or it will pop back in for no reason. I don't particularly like the fact that this tool is put in there like that.. Its very inconvenient when you're cleaning and it goes in and out, in and out.

The top that you empty by pressing the two silver side buttons doesn't always latch down and it happened to open mid cleaning and spill its contents all over the stairs on me.. Nice.

Its big and bulky and definitely not user friendly. I prefer the skinnier vacuums.

  • Update 06/16/10=is performing consist and pick up is better than most handhelds.

I previously owned a Shark 15 volt with roller brush. It is getting old so I am shifting it to car clean up only. So when I shopped for a replacement, it was down to The Euro Pro Shark 16.9 volt with motorized brush or this one. I could not find the Dirt Devil in a store to look at, but did look at the Euro Pro in the store.

I purchased the Dirt Devil because it had higher volts, the crevice tool is attached, and it is supposedly easier to empty the cup.

However, this DD does not have the immediate power suction my old 15 volt Shark has. You have to be more methodical about it, and run the thing slower over the areas. It picks up good though.

The Euro Pro has more bristles.

I like the attached crevice tool, one less thing to keep up with.

I really can't see the big deal that it is easier to empty the cup.

This is great. It does hard to reach spots and has great suction. I use it all the time.
